“Showdown, No Stand Down”

two anole lizards staring at each other on a rusted old chain black and white

March 2011

There was something intensely whimsical about this scene as I stumbled across it one March morning in the greenhouse. Given the instant impression of arriving just in time to catch the tail end of a masterful story, all I can imagine is that these two warrior dwarves had spent the dawn hours engaged in epic, pitched prehistoric combat – in miniature.

While the subjects were undeniably vibrant in shades of green, with vicious blue and black war paint, the moment itself cried for the starkness and stripped-bare focus of black and white. I felt anything else would do a disservice to the rich textures and priceless expressions that my subjects were kind enough to supply.
